What is plate rolling?

Plate rolling – also called plate bending – is a cold-forming process that curves flat metal plate into cylinders, cones, and dished shells by feeding it between three or four powered rolls. Adjusting the rolls across successive passes forms the shells behind pressure vessels, tanks, wind towers, and curved structures. Because the force is applied progressively rather than in a single hit, the result is a smooth, continuous radius with minimal flat ends.

These are different names for one thing: curving flat plate on a plate roll. “Plate rolling” describes the process, “plate bending” is the common European synonym, and a “plate roll” or “plate bending roll” is the machine that does it. The rolls, the passes, and the finished cylinder or cone are the same whichever word your market uses.

How plate rolling works

The plate is fed between powered rolls; a top or side roll presses it into a curve while the driven rolls feed it through. The radius is approached over several passes rather than in one hit, and pre-bending the leading and trailing edges curves the parts of the plate that the rolls cannot otherwise reach – minimising the flat ends that would have to be re-worked or cut off. Because plate springs back slightly, the operator over-bends a touch and checks the shell against a template before the final pass.

Plate rolling curves flat plate into cylinders and cones. Section bending curves structural profiles – beam, angle, channel, tube, bar – along their length into rings and arcs. A 3-roll (pyramid) machine bends between one moving roll and two fixed rolls; the plate is usually turned end-for-end to pre-bend the second edge. A 4-roll machine grips the plate between two pinch rolls and bends with two side rolls, so it pre-bends both ends without re-loading – giving a firmer grip, shorter flat ends, and tighter control. Three-roll plate rolls are simpler and cost less; four-roll plate rolls are faster and more repeatable on production runs and cones.

Plate rolls produce cylinders, cones, arcs, and large-radius curves – the raw shells behind pressure vessels, storage tanks, silos, wind-tower sections, penstocks, and curved architectural steel. Cone bending is the same machine run at an angle so one edge feeds faster than the other, using side supports or a cone-bending device to hold the narrow end back. Multi-pass rolling and pre-bending keep the seam tight, so the shell needs less fit-up before welding.
