The roll bending method

What is roll bending?

Roll bending is a cold-forming process that curves flat plate or a structural profile by feeding it between three or four rolls. Repositioning the rolls across successive passes forms the material into cylinders, cones, rings, and large-radius curves – the shapes behind pressure vessels, tanks, wind-tower sections, and curved steel structures. Because the force is applied progressively rather than in a single hit, the result is a smooth, continuous radius with minimal flat ends.

Roll bending vs. roll forming: what’s the difference?

The two are often confused, but they solve different problems. Roll forming shapes a continuous metal strip into a fixed cross-section profile through a line of forming stations. Roll bending curves a plate or a finished profile along its length into a radius or ring. In short: roll forming makes the profile, and roll bending bends that material into shape.

Roll bending vs. press (bump) bending

Press, or bump, bending forms one straight crease at a time with a punch and die, then repositions the part for the next hit. A curve made this way is a series of small facets that usually needs hand-finishing. Roll bending curves the material continuously between the rolls, producing a true, consistent radius with fewer flat ends, higher repeatability, and far less setup between bends.

Where roll bending fits among bending methods

The three common press-brake methods are air bending, bottoming, and coining, which differ by how far the punch drives the material into the die. Roll bending is a separate, continuous method – used when the job is a curve, ring, or cylinder rather than a straight crease.
