What metal forming is
Metal forming shapes metal by force rather than by cutting: controlled plastic deformation pushes the material past its yield point into a new shape, with almost no waste. The metal forming processes, and where roll-forming fits
Most metal forming processes fall into a few families: forging and stamping press the material against a die, extrusion and drawing force it through one, and rolling passes it between powered rolls. Roll-forming – the group SweBend builds machines for – curves plate and profiles progressively between rolls, producing smooth, continuous radii instead of the single creases a press brake leaves. How roll-forming works in practice
Every SweBend method works the same way. The material is fed between powered rolls; moving one roll, or a pinch pair, presses it into a curve while the drive rolls feed it forward. The radius is approached over several passes rather than in a single hit, and pre-bending the leading and trailing ends minimises the flat ends that would otherwise be cut off as scrap. Because steel springs back slightly when the load is released, the operator over-bends by a measured amount to compensate. Roll power, drive torque and guide-roll support decide how heavy a section can be curved and how precisely it holds the radius – which is why these are the numbers that separate a clean part from an expensive scrap piece.

The three roll-forming methods

Materials: steel, stainless and aluminium
The same roll-forming process handles carbon steel, stainless and aluminium; the difference is in the tooling and the pass sequence. Softer aluminium profiles need tailored rolls and gentler passes so the surface is not marked, while high-strength steels need more roll power and a larger springback allowance. Matching the rolls, the pass plan and the machine to the grade is what keeps precision consistent across mixed material – and it is why SweBend sizes each machine to the job rather than selling one setup for everything.
