What is section bending?

Section bending – also called angle rolling or profile bending – is a cold-forming process that curves a structural profile along its length by feeding it between three or four powered rolls. Adjusting the rolls across successive passes bends beams, angles, channel, tube, and bar into rings, arcs, spirals, and coils – the shapes behind pressure vessels, curved steel structures, and architecture. Because the force is applied progressively rather than in a single hit, the result is a smooth, continuous radius with minimal flat ends.

These are three names for one process: curving a structural section on an angle roll. “Angle rolling” is the common US term, “profile bending” the broader European one, and “section bending” SweBend’s category name. The machine – a three- or four-roll angle roll – and the finished ring or arc are identical, whichever word your market uses.

The profile is fed between powered rolls; moving one roll (or a pinch pair) presses it into a curve, while guide rolls hold the section square so an asymmetric profile like angle bar does not twist. The radius is approached over multiple passes, and pre-bending the leading and trailing ends minimises the flat ends that would otherwise have to be cut off.

Section bending curves structural profiles – beam, angle, tube, bar – along their length into rings and arcs. Plate rolling curves flat plate into cylinders and cones. A 3-roll (pyramid) machine bends with one moving roll and two fixed rolls, leaving short flat ends that need pre-bending. A 4-roll machine grips the profile between two pinch rolls and bends with two side rolls, giving a firmer grip, shorter flat ends, and better control – which is why it is preferred for asymmetric sections and softer materials like aluminium.

Angle rolls produce rings, arcs, spirals, helical coils, and large-radius curves from I- and H-beam, angle (bent leg-in or leg-out), channel, flat bar, square and round tube, HSS, pipe, and T-section. Real outputs include pressure-vessel and shroud rings, staircase stringers and handrails, curved architectural steel, and ship and offshore frames – anywhere a structural profile has to follow a controlled curve.
